Vernon Dale Smith Sr ., age 72, of Belcourt, ND passed away on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at his home in Belcourt, ND.

Vernon Dale Smith Sr. was born on September 12, 1948 in Manila, AR to Vernon H. Smith and Winnie Maxine (Berretta) Smith.  He was raised in California and completed his education there as well.  Vernon was united in marriage to Linda (Houle) Smith on July 19, 1988 in Bottineau, ND and have been together for over 42 years.  They raised five children, Steven, Laurali, Amanda, Alexandria, and Vernon Jr.  He worked as a roofer in California for 17 years before moving to Belcourt and working for two years at the manufacturing plant.  Vernon loved being outdoors, gardening, hunting, fishing, camping, and working on various projects.  He was a jack of all trades and was able to fix anything.  Vernon adored his grandchildren and loved to spend time with them.  He liked carpentry and was able to build anything he put his mind to, adding in beautiful designs as well.  Vernon will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his family members and many friends.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Linda (Houle) Smith of Belcourt; children, Steven (Kerry) Patneaud of St. John, Laurali (Patneaud )Hanel of Grand Forks, Amanda (Duane) Belgarde of Belcourt, Alexandria (Edward LaVallie) Smith of Belcourt, and Vernon Jr. (Crystal Scott) Smith of Belcourt; thirteen grandchildren, Carmen, Megan, Monica, Samantha, Eric, Patrick, Duane Jr., Nickolas, Adeline, Edward Jr., Honey,  Halana, and Vernon III; nine great- grandchildren; siblings, Judy Stipe of Kokomo, IN, Terri Smith of Russellville, AR, Bridget Pavese of Kokomo, IN, and Mary Jane Ferria of Modesto, CA; and nieces and nephews, mother-in-law (Marion Houle), sister-in-laws, and brother-in-laws.

Pallbearers: Vernon Smith Jr, Amanda Belgarde, Alexandria Smith, Edward Lavallie Sr., Eric Patneaud, Monica Patneaud, Duane Belgarde Jr., Steven Patneaud.

Honorary pallbearers: all family and friends.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Patrick Hanel, sisters, Toni Pavese and Wanda Mayhew, and brother, Jerry Smith.

A visitation will begin at 6:30 PM on Sunday, August 29, 2021 at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Belcourt, ND with a Rosary Service at 8:00 PM done by Christina Peltier and Gilbert Martell..  Funeral Mass will be Monday, August 30, 2021 at 10:00 AM in the church.  Burial will be at his home, Belcourt, ND. A meal will follow at the Fiddler's Hall.
