Obituary

Vera Havig, age 84, of Rolette, ND passed away on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at the Rolette Community Care Center, Rolette, ND.

Vera Lavonne (Beaver) Havig was born on June 7, 1936 in Rolette, ND to Willie and Alma (Johnson) Beaver.  She was raised in the Rolette area and completed her education there as well, graduating from Rolette High School in 1954.  She was an active member of the Ox Creek Lutheran Church most of her life and later Ebenezer Lutheran Brethren Church.  Vera was a Sunday School teacher, member of the ladie's aide, holding various offices for both, and sang for many, many occasions.  She was an active member of Luther League, where she met a young gentleman that was very smitten with her, Orville Havig.  She joked that she was not interested in him, allowing him to ask for her hand in marriage three times before accepting.  On October 3, 1954 they were united in marriage and together raised eight children.  They made their first home south of Rolette near Nanson and later moved closer to Rolette on what became the family farm.  They tended to many crops and animals including milk cows, chickens, and goats.

While raising eight children, Vera became an accomplished seamstress, sewing clothing for everyone in the family.  She was an excellent baker, which she shared with the community when she owned and operated Granny's Oven, later changed to Granny's Ceramic's.  Vera attended nursing school with all eight children at home.  She worked as a nurse at the Rolette Hospital, Rolla Hospital, Rugby Hospital, and the Dunseith Nursing Home.  She had many hobbies over the years including knitting, making many afghans and sweaters for family and many others in the area, art, which she loved, and puzzles.  Vera organized the Rolette Art Club, a group that met regularly to create beautiful art and create murals on the Rolette Mall.  She had a large part in writing the Rolette Centennial Book and helped organize the celebration.

Over the years, Vera stayed close to home.  She did, however, travel to South Dakota for a memorable family vacation, Arizona, South Carolina, Texas, Florida, Minnesota, Virginia, for special events, and also to Idaho with her sister, Anna.  Vera was loved by all who were blessed to meet her, work with her, and knew her.  She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Vera is survived by her children, Phyllis (Darrel) Abrahamson of St. John, Arlene Havig of Bismarck, Julie (Pete) Deichert of Raleigh, Irene (Terry) Karnopp of Bismarck, Andy Havig of Rolette, Emily Tumey of Rolette, Laura (Rick) Hendrickson of Rolla, and Curtis Havig of Grand Forks; 27 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; brother, Arnold (Pauline) Beaver of Rolette; sister-in-law, Carol Havig of Billings, MT; and many nieces and nephews.
