Obituary

Roxie Mae LaFromboise, 77, of Belcourt, ND, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 30, 2025, at SMP - St. Kateri Hospital in Rolla, ND.

Roxie was born on August 8, 1947, in Boise, Idaho, to Alfred and Ollie (Rape) Schuschke. She was raised in Lidgerwood, North Dakota, where she graduated from high school. Roxie continued her education at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, earning both her bachelor's and master's degrees in education.

Her teaching career began in Fort Yates, and she lived in Solen, ND, during that time. She worked with the Head Start program, teaching in communities across the Standing Rock Reservation, including Little Eagle, South Dakota, and Cannon Ball, North Dakota. Roxie later moved to Bismarck, where she joined the faculty at United Tribes Technical College. It was there that she met and married Joseph LaFromboise on May 22, 1976.

Roxie and Joseph made their home in Belcourt on the LaFromboise family's original homestead. Together they raised their daughter, Joy. Roxie later worked for Dunseith Public School and then at Ojibwa Indian School once Joy began school. The family moved to Wahpeton, ND, when they accepted positions at Circle of Nations Boarding School, formerly known as Wahpeton Indian School. The move also brought them closer to Roxie's family and the family farm, which was a cherished part of her life.

Eventually, Roxie returned to Belcourt to be near her daughter and grandson. She found joy in quilting, scrapbooking, sewing, knitting, the outdoors, especially watching hummingbirds, gardening, her flowers and spending time at the lake. She loved being with her family and was a constant presence at her grandson Max's sporting events. Watching him grow brought her great pride and happiness.

Roxie had deep pride in her military family and in the family farm, and she often shared stories from her life that will be passed down through generations. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.

Roxie is survived by her daughter, Joy LaFromboise of Belcourt; her grandson, Max LaFromboise of Belcourt; and her brother, Rick (Judene) Schuschke of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Ollie Schuschke, and her husband, Joseph LaFromboise.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025 at 6:00 PM at Elick Funeral Home, Rolla, ND with visitation beginning at 5:00 PM prior to funeral services.  Pastor Gary Schuschke officiating.
