Ronald MacKinnon, age 84, of Rolla, ND passed away peacefully on Monday, November 17, 2025 at SMP-St. Kateri Hospital, Rolla, ND.
Ronald Gerald MacKinnon, was born on September 13, 1941, the youngest of four children born to John and Flora (Bercier) MacKinnon. Ron was raised in Rolla and completed his education at Rolla High School, graduating in 1961. Ron was a gifted athlete. In high school Ron earned all-conference honors and was Captain of the Rolla Bulldogs football team his senior year, was an excellent runner who also enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. He was very proud of Rolla's 1960 State B Basketball Championship and their undefeated and conference winning football seasons.
After graduation he attended college in Minot, ND for a short time before deciding to enter the US Air Force and received an honorable discharge in 1963. After his discharge, Ron worked road construction for many years, then other construction projects, including Rolla's new school gym, until an injury forced his retirement.
Ron was involved in a variety of activities in the community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th degree, running the bingo games at the K of C Hall in Belcourt, ND for many years. He was a proud member of the Fred C Wagner American Legion Post 235 in Rolla for over 50 years. Ron knew hardship and was proud of being a recovered alcoholic for over 35 years. Ron also served on the Rolla Park and Recreation Boards, KEYA radio Board of Directors, and the Rolette County Social Services Board for many years.
Ron loved participating in, watching and supporting all sports. He received a special community recognition award from the Rolla FFA Chapter for supporting youth activities. He was also known to treat high school football players for Friday game breakfasts and he would buy pizza for Wednesday Night Catholic Church Youth Group. "Back in the day" Ron coached the Turtle Mountain Belles women's softball team and pitched many years for the Rolla-Mylo Nodaks independent baseball team.
Anyone who visited with Ron knew how much he LOVED Rolla and all his friends, especially the RHS Class of 1961 and his teammates. He was very loyal to all. Ron was a devoted son to his mother, Flora, until her passing. Ron will be lovingly remembered and missed by many throughout his community.
Ron is survived by his two daughters, Jody and Tammy MacKinnon; sister, Judy Wagner of Jamestown, ND, and brother, Dick in Oregon; nieces, Mary Johnson and Susan (Dennis) Fieber of Jamestown. Also survived by his great niece, Nichole (Jason) George, Jamestown and great nephew, Andrew Peterson, Fargo. He also has great great nieces, Caitlin (Kade) Young, Allison George and Madison Schmidt, all of Jamestown, plus many cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Flora MacKinnon, brother, Duane "Manny" MacKinnon, and nephew, John Gardner.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 20, 2025 at St. Joachim Catholic Church, Rolla, ND with Father Thai Arul and Father Jared Kadlec, presiding. Visitation will begin at Noon with a Rosary Service at 1:00 PM prior to the funeral mass. Burial will take place at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Rolla, ND with military honors provided by the Fred C Wagner American Legion Post 235 of Rolla, ND. A meal will be held in the church basement following the funeral mass and burial, all are encouraged to attend in Ron's honor.
