Richard (Dick) Carl Mickelson, who was named after both of his grandfathers, was born on October 23, 1949, the second son of Yvonne (Johnson) and Benhart Mickelson. His younger years were spent on a farmstead North of Rolla, moving into town in 1961. He attended Rolla Public school. During his high school years, he was already interested in agriculture, taking Vo-ag classes and was a member of the FFA Chapter. He was center on the Bulldog football team and to this day remembered many plays and games with fellow team members, graduating in 1967.

He attended NDSU (Go Bison) for two years, coming back to farm with his brother, Bill after his father suffered a heart attack. His brother Ken later joined them. The four of them farmed together until his father passed away in 1985.

In 2003 he began a farming partnership with his son, Cameron, later adding two grandsons, Evan and Reid and a grandson-in-law, Thomas Hendrickson. He loved farming. He could hardly wait to get out on the tractor and cultivate in the spring.

In his younger years he loved to hunt, trap and was always fishing. He once served on the Rolla Coop Elevator Board, ND Pea and Lentil Council, USA Dry Pea and Lentil Council board, Park View Assisted Living Board and was President of the ND State Curling Association in 1977.

He & his wife enjoyed the winter months in Las Vegas, NV for the last 12 years, taking in shows, eating wonderful food, playing blackjack and golfing.

He is survived by his golfing, fishing, traveling and life partner of 53 years (January 2, 1970) Bobbie, Children: Cameron (Danielle), Rolla, Sally, Henderson, NV, Benjamin, Mooreton, ND; Grandchildren: Kaylee Mickelson, Rachael (Thomas) Hendrickson, Ethan, Evan & Reid Mickelson, Great-Grandson, Kampbell Richard Hendrickson. Siblings: Bill (Cindy) Mickelson, Lake Upsilon, Pat (Cliff) Berndt, Underwood, MN, Ken (Beth) Mickelson, Thief River Falls, MN, Aunts: Hazel Hoyhtya, WA, Emma Kvalie, TX, Lucille Tabatt, MN, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, several aunts, uncles and cousins.

In November 2022 he was diagnosed with a glioblastoma (Brain Tumor) and had been receiving treatment at the Mayo clinic in Phoenix. He spent the last few months connecting with old friends, classmates, relatives or frankly, anyone who would talk with him! Each conversation brought him more pleasure than they realized. His prognosis was grim but unfortunately Lake Sakakawea was his place of demise after a tragic drowning on July 17, 2023.

He will be missed by many.

Services will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Rolla with a luncheon to follow. A private family burial will be held later.

You are encouraged to wear a Hawaiian shirt or anything blue to the Celebration of Life for a life too short, but well lived.
