Peter Sylvester McCloud, age 84, of Dunseith, North Dakota, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.

Born on November 22, 1941, in Bottineau to Collin Sr. and Mabel Houle McCloud, Peter was raised at Lake Metigoshe, attended country school, and later moved into Bottineau. He was the proud father of sons Peter Jr., Destin, Jemal, and Jacob, and a daughter, Anna. Leaving home at a young age, Peter began a life filled with adventure and hard work. He traveled across the United States as a stunt motorcycle rider, worked on a carnival, and spent time on a shrimp boat—an experience he decided not to repeat after one particularly rough trip. He later ran two cafés, working long hours with an unmatched work ethic. In his later years, he served as a cook at Dunseith Public School, where he worked for many years. Peter was first married to Dorothy Katonka, with whom he welcomed sons Peter Jr. and Destin. He later married Pamela French in Souris, North Dakota, and together they raised Jemal, Anna, and Jacob. Peter found great love throughout his life and cherished his family deeply. He enjoyed bird watching, fishing, and cursing the woodpeckers that insisted on hammering the side of his house. He loved taking drives and never missed an early‑morning coffee run to Dale's Café. Above all, he adored his grandchildren, and his family will forever remember his kindness, laughter, and endless dad jokes.

Peter is survived by his sons, Peter McCloud Jr. and Destin McCloud, both of San Antonio, Texas, and Jacob McCloud of Dunseith; his daughter, Anna French of Billings, Montana; his grandchildren; and his siblings: Ernest "Mac" McCloud of Georgia, Donna Johnson of Minnesota, Bonnie McCloud of Dunseith, Dale McCloud of Saint John, Collin McCloud Jr. of Grand Forks, Colleen Cartwright of South Dakota, Byron McCloud of Dunseith, Kevin McCloud of Dunseith, and Ann Cartwright of Dunseith. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Collin Sr. and Mabel McCloud; his wife, Pam McCloud; his son, Jemal French; and his siblings, Viola McCloud, Shirley McCloud, Sylvia Haakenson, Leland McCloud, twins Clinton and Clayton McCloud, and Kenneth McCloud.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Eagle Heart Cultural Center, Dunseith, ND. Father Sam Medley officiating.
