Leona Mae
Tetrault
Jan 13, 1945 — Jun 7, 2025
Leona Tetrault, 80 years old, passed peacefully at the Rolette Community Care Center on Saturday, June 7, 2025. In recent years, dementia took hold of Leona's life. That struggle is over and she is now safe with our Lord.
On January 13, 1945, Leona Mae was born to George and Christine (Baumstark) Streifel in Eureka, SD. She grew up in that area and graduated, just across the border into North Dakota, from Zeeland High School. Leona then attended college in Ellendale, ND. She worked at NDSU in Fargo for a time before moving to Rolette. In Rolette was where she met and married the love of her life, Lawrence "LT" Tetrault. They stood strong in their Catholic faith together and exchanged wedding vows in 1966 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rolette.
Leona's world was made bright on January 11, 1967, when their only child was born – a daughter, Melissa Ann "Missy" Tetrault. LT and Missy were the light of Leona's life, caring for them with passion. Leona endured hardship in 1994 when LT was killed in a car accident and heartache hit again when Missy died in 2012. She then focused her devotion on caring for her only grandchild, Missy's son, Ty Tetrault – whom she adored. He was her world and she was his. When Leona could no longer care for Ty, he was lovingly entrusted to their nephew and his wife, Chad and Dawn Thompson.
Leona was a familiar face in the community holding various positions as dental assistant, Rolette City Auditor and even had a partnership with Shirley Scott at one time, in which they ran the Home Town Café. Health was important to Leona and she shared that interest by teaching aerobics classes.
Leona enjoyed gardening and canning. She was known to make Borscht every year and share it with friends. She was a collector of various items, liked golf and playing cards. Most mornings began by joining friends for coffee and breakfast at Linda's Café, a highlight of her day. Leona could be seen buzzing about in her Volkswagon "Tobasco" car. She also enjoyed time spent with friend, Jack Glander, traveling and attending concerts.
Leona is survived by her grandson, Ty Tetrault; his parents, Chad and Dawn Thompson, all of Surrey; sisters, Alice (Floyd) Wilt of Wrightsville, PA and Carolyn Streifel of Scottsdale, AZ; sister-in-law, Donna Streifel of Bloomington, MN; LT's sister, Shirley Anderson of Minot; nieces and nephews. Leona is also survived by a host of friends, including Kermit and Lori Knudson of Rolette.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence "LT" Tetrault; daughter, Melissa "Missy" Tetrault; parents, George and Christine Streifel; brother, Thomas; LT's parents, Joseph and Mary Tetrault; LT's siblings, Dorothy Laverdure, Francis "Frankie" Rebischke, Joan Thompson, Irene Bisbee, Joseph "Buzzy" Tetrault, and Eugene Tetrault; nieces and nephews.
