Dr. Kenard Allen Turner II, age 90, of Rolla, ND, passed away February 1, 2022 at SMP Health-St. Kateri, Rolla, ND.

It is with sadness that we the family announce the passing of our father and grandfather, on February 1, 2022. Dr. Kenard Allen Turner II was born into a loving home to Kenard and Leona (Oleyhane) Turner on February 11, 1931 in Buffalo, New York. He was the youngest of four children.

Ken attended grades k-8 at Public School #60 and grades 9-12 at Riverside High School in Buffalo, NY. He was accepted to the University of Buffalo and graduated with a degree in Biology.

While at the University of Buffalo, he was a Zoology Teaching Assistant. This is where he met the love of his life RuthAnn Bratton. They were married in Hershey, Pennsylvania on July 7, 1953. To this union four children were born: Kenard III (Tami) of Elk River, Minnesota, Dr. William (Heide) of Rolla, Suzanne (Kent) Weston of Sarles, and Peter (Holly Tran) of Champaign, Illinois.

Ken was inducted into the United States Army in 1953. Ken and RuthAnn made their home in Ft. Benning, Georgia until he was honorably discharged in 1955. While in the service he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Ribbon. Ken and RuthAnn then moved to Albany, New York where he was employed by Sterling Winthrop Institute. Ken worked as a medical researcher on the rare muscular neurological disease Myasthenia Gravis.

He was then accepted to the University of Buffalo Dental School and graduated with a D.D.S degree in 1960. Ken and RuthAnn moved their family to Rolla, ND in February of 1961 and established Turner Dental Office where he practiced for fifty-three years. Ken was extremely proud when his son William joined him in practice in 1985. They had the privilege of working together for 29 years. Another memorable moment for Ken came in July of 2021 when his grandson Luke, joined the practice. At the time of Ken's retirement, he was the oldest dentist with an active license in North Dakota. He was affectionally known as "Doc" to many in Rolette County.

After moving to Rolla, Ken and RuthAnn became members of the Presbyterian Church and then later became members of Our Saviors Lutheran Church where they served on many committees. One of Ken's favorite activities was helping to make the apple pies for the Fall Bazaar. Ken was a charter member of the Rolla Kiwanis Club, a member of the Rolla Masonic Lodge #66, as well as a member of the Lelia #50: Order of Eastern Star organization, where he served as Worthy Patron and Associate Patron along with participation on other committees. He was a lifelong member and supporter of the Fred C. Wagner American Legion Post #235. Ken and RuthAnn enjoyed serving on the Rolla Centennial Committee together.  Ken was a lifetime member of the North Dakota Dental Association and served in many capacities in the North Central Dental District. Additionally, he founded and was the chairman of the Concerned Dentists Committee for many years. This committee was formed to provide assistance for dentists battling addictions.

On November 14, 1976 Ken made the courageous decision to enter treatment for alcoholism at Heartview, a treatment center in Bismarck, ND. This decision determined the direction his life would take from then on. He became a loyal member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He was involved with the Rolla, Belcourt, Killarney, Manitoba and Ft. Pierce, Florida A.A chapters, sponsoring many individuals over the past 45 years while acting as Secretary-Treasurer for his local chapter as well as a speaker at A.A round ups. He was incredibly proud of his sobriety and he always said it allowed him to "be happy, joyous, and free."

Ken was an avid waterfowl and upland game hunter. This passion developed from time spent hunting with his father which he then passed on to his own children and grandchildren. For several years Ken raised and released pheasants in Rolette County and also raised exotic chickens at the Wayne Kartes Farm following his retirement. Ken also loved to fish; one of his fishing highlights was landing a sailfish from Pompano Beach, Florida. He proudly displayed it in his dental office reception room for many years. Other hobbies Ken enjoyed included metal detecting, gardening, as well as any type of card game, especially pinochle and in later years Skip-Bo. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, especially at the cabin on Lake Upsilon. Last but not least, Ken was a devoted Minnesota Twins fan.

Ken is survived by his four children and twelve grandchildren: Kenard Turner IV, Kristopher (Amber) Turner, Kurtis Turner, Kassandra (John) Schroeder, Wyatt (Lianna) Turner, Hayley Turner, Ethan Turner, Dr. Luke (Casey) Weston, Michelle (Spencer Skavhaug) Weston, Rachel Weston, Breanna Turner, and Abigail Turner; five great grandchildren, Vayda Turner, Oliver Turner, Chase Brown-Turner, Lyla Brown-Turner and baby Weston (due in April). Brother and sister-in-law Dr. Edward (Karen) Bratton of Trinity, Florida and brother-in-law Don (Nicole) Nichols of Venice Beach, Florida, many loving nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-three years RuthAnn, his parents Kenard Sr. and Leona, his mother and father-in-law Edward and Ruth Bratton, his sisters and brothers-in-law, Lorene (Ian) McDougal and Ethelda (John) Chudy, brother and sister-in-law, Berkley (Martha) Turner, sister-in-law Judy Nichols, niece LeeAnn Holtzman and great- nephew Richard Graves.

A memorial service will be held on February 19, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Rolla with Dave Schnackenberg officiating. The service will be live streamed on the Presbyterian Church of Rolla and St. John Facebook page. Private family burial in the Rolla City Cemetery with military honors will be held at a later date. Memorials are preferred to the Heartview Foundation or SMP Health-St. Kateri.
