Obituary

Joy Berginski, born December 1, 1942, died April 19, 2026, at Altru in Grand Forks surrounded by her loving family.  Joy was born to Alex (Buck) and Vera (Garrison) James at Picton Township.  She graduated from the St. John School in 1960, and she was married to Ronald (Pete) Berginski on June 4, 1960. They had seven children.

Through the years, she ranched with her husband and children.  She especially loved working with the horses. Along with working on the farm, she was a tax assessor, a teacher's aide and substitute at the St. John School, she worked at Rolla Merc, the Rolla Hospital, PemStar in Dunseith, IHS in Belcourt, and the Credit Union in St John. Joy also ran a daycare for many years where she developed life-long relationships, none as close as Nicholas Parisien.

Joy was very involved in the St. John Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the congregation, served on Lady's Aide, and was the educational director for bible school and Session. She was also a 4-H leader for many years.

Hobbies that she enjoyed were attending sporting events of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing cards, fishing, hunting, taxidermy, crocheting, sewing, baking and cooking. She was also a proud supporter of the St. John Woodchucks.

In 2000, she earned her associate's degree from TMCC, something she was especially proud of.

Joy is survived by her children, Flo(Neil) Halley of Grand Forks, Annie(Mark) Berginski of Inkster, Alan (Lisa) Berginski of St John, Ruth (Ray) Berginski of St John, Holly (Jason) Vasfaret of Baldwin WI, and Missy Berginski of St John; grandchildren, David(Alicia) Berginski, Chad Berginski, Dawn (Rollie) Berginski, Tyler (Kristine)Berginski, Kristen (Hunter) Olsonawski, Megan (Austin)Berginski; great-grandchildren, Hunter McCammitt, Olivia Berginski, Cooper Berginski, Hudson Berginski, and Asher Berginski; sister, Jill Parisien; sisters-in-law, Carol James, Sheryl James, and Brenda James; daughter-in-law, Dawn Berginski; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald (Pete) Berginski, son, Mark Berginski, parents, Alex and Vera James, siblings, Betty (Gus) Gustafson, Jean (Joe) Vandal, Faye (Bunny) Indvik, Roy and Laura Lou James, John James, and Pat James, many brothers and sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.

Casket Bearers are Nicholas Parisien, David Berginski, Chad Berginski, Greg Berginski, Preston Halvorson, Pat Indvik, Tyler Berginski, and Hunter McCammitt.  Music by Shawn James.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at the St. John Community Center (Old Gym), St. John, ND with visitation One Hour prior to services.  Burial will immediately follow funeral services at St. John City Cemetery, St. John, ND. The family would like to invite everyone to join them back at the St. John Community Center (Old Gym) for lunch and memories.
