Jayton Slater, age 22, of Belcourt, ND passed away on Monday, May 25, 2026 in Belcourt, ND.
Jayton Lee Slater was born on January 1, 2004 in Belcourt, ND to John Slater Sr. and Sharilyn Bercier. He was raised in Belcourt and graduated from St. John High School in 2022 where he was an exceptional athlete, awarded all state and all region in football. Jayton was a loving fiancé to Chelsi DeCoteau and a wonderful father to Kaizyn, Elli, and Emmi, he loved being a dad and was a true family man. He was deeply loved by his family and was truly an amazing son and brother. Jayton worked for the Belcourt School District as an event staff member. He was involved in his community as a volunteer firefighter, which he loved, coached basketball with younger kids on traveling teams, and raced and trained horses, always talking and dreaming of becoming a jockey one day with family and friends. Jayton had a personality that everyone gravitated toward, a happy soul and a peacemaker to those he surrounded himself with. He will forever be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Jayton is survived by his fiancé, Chelsi DeCoteau of Belcourt; children, Kaizyn, Elli, and Emmi DeCoteau of Belcourt; mother, Sharilyn Bercier of Belcourt; father, John Slater Sr. of Belcourt; siblings, Kayla Hart (Animikig Laverdure) Bercier of Rolla, John William (Shania Allard) Slater Jr. of Belcourt, Charles Jaegar Slater of Belcourt; and bonus brother Michael "Tigger" (Marissa) Bercier; nieces, Hallie, Tatelyn, Maddijo, Isabella, Brynnleigh, Gracie, Taetym, Saylor, Ellie, Hexley, Kollyns, and Kouvr; nephews, Tayven, Trent and Ike; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins in the Bercier, Slater, DeCoteau, Trottier families.
Jayton was preceded in death by his grandparents, Darrell and Sharon Bercier and Lawrence Peteson and Mary Louise Slater and father-in-law, Charles "Chucky" DeCoteau.
Casket Bearers are John Slater Jr., Charles Slater, Brayton Baker, Avan Belgarde, Layton Vondal, Michael "Tigger" Bercier, Sal Bercier, Riley Vondal, Ethan DeCoteau, Stetson Baker. Music by Chad Marcellais and Terry Baker. Eucharistic Gifts by Shellyann Slater and Ryhlin Slater. Readers are Kayla Trottier, Ike Trottier, and Brenda Slater. Rosary led by Brenda Trottier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Belcourt, ND with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM and Rosary Service at NOON prior to the funeral mass. Burial will follow at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery, Belcourt, ND. Father Michael Slovak presiding. A meal will follow services at the Derrick Dixon Center, Belcourt, ND.
