Obituary

Irene DeCoteau, age 78, of Belcourt, ND passed away on Monday, February 24, 2020 at her home.


Irene Marie DeCoteau was born on September 18, 1941 in Belcourt, ND to Norman and Alice (Belgarde) Demery. She was raised in Dunseith and attended Greatwalker School. Irene was united in marriage to Oliver DeCoteau on December 31, 1970 in Rolla, ND. Together they had nine children, Brenda, Renee, JoAnn, Debra, Marty, Mary Ann, Bernadine, Gordon, and Darrel. She worked as a receptionist at the Skydancer Casino in Belcourt. Irene enjoyed being at the casino, playing bingo and dice, playing cards, and watching Monday Night Wrestling. She loved being with her family and was full of life. In their younger years, Irene and Oliver enjoyed traveling together. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her family members and many friends.


Irene is survived by her children, Brenda (Danny) Hall of Mandaree, Renee (Richard) Counts of Dunseith, JoAnn (James Gladue) Bercier of Belcourt, Debra (Ronald Bruce) McCloud of Belcourt, Marty DeCoteau of Minneapolis, MN, Darrel DeCoteau of Belcourt, and Janelle DeCoteau, whom she raised like a daughter; 27 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and siblings, Dorothy Desjarlais, Theresa LaFontaine, Ernestine LaFountaine, and Linda K. Vallie.


Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Oliver DeCoteau, daughters, Mary Ann and Bernadine, son, Gordon, grandson, Levi Grant, great grandson, Daniel Hall III, sister, Sara, and brothers, Fred, Larry, Charles, Floyd, and Bill Demery.


A visitation will begin at 5:00 PM on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Belcourt, ND with a Rosary Service at 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be Friday, February 28, 2020 at 10:00 AM in the church with Fr. Dennis Mary Dugan presiding. Burial will be in St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery, Belcourt, ND.
