Henry "Mokie" Martin, JEBA I NINI "Morning Man", age 78, of Belcourt, passed away on April 21, 2021, at his residence surrounded by numerous family members and friends. Services include a Traditional Ceremony which will take place on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at 8:00 p.m. Catholic Services will take place on Tuesday, April 27 th at St. Ann's Church with visitation beginning at 8:00 a.m., Rosary at 9:00 a.m., and Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m.
Mokie was the son of Henry "Hank" Martin Sr., and Flora (Gourneau) Martin, he was the 5 th born of eleven children. Grandson of Joseph Martin and Mary (Desjarlais) Martin and Joseph "Keesh Kemun Ishiw" Gourneau and Eliza (McLeod) Gourneau.
Mokie had a lifelong passion for vehicles of all kinds. He and his younger sibling John graduated together from Hanson Mechanical School in Fargo, ND in 1969 with doctorate degrees in automotive repair, diesel repair, collision and auto body repair, electrical and welding. Mokie owned and operated "Mokie's Garage" for many, many years and was well known throughout the community and state because of it. He worked in his garage steadily until December of 2020, in early January of this year his health required him to be hospitalized when he returned home, he continued to do as much as he physically could handle in his garage.
Mokie married Debbie "Chook" Keplin in September of 2013, and they resided at his home in Martinville. Mokie and Chook shared many happy years as they had very similar likes and tastes, especially when it came to family gatherings, love of music, storytelling, and laughter. Mokie enjoyed spending time with all his family members and friends. He was greatly respected and loved by all and was the very definition of legendary as he is widely known across many generations for his heart and generosity.
Mokie is survived by his wife Debbie "Keplin" Martin, daughter Jayla Martin, grandchildren Max Martin, Farrah Dauphinais, Phoenix Dauphinais, siblings, John (Donna) Martin, Twila (Rollin) Kekahbah, Jay (Linda) Martin, Jerry (Charlotte) Martin, Dean (Delilah) Martin, Cathie (Charles) Gladue all of Belcourt and brother-in-law Glen Sperry of Fort Worth, Texas.
Mokie was preceded in death by his son David Henry Martin, parents; Flora and Henry "Hank" Martin, siblings; Carol Lee Ransford, Judith Rose Sperry, Janet Mary Lenoir, Richard Butch Martin, brothers-in-law; Oriville "Ike" Ransford, Michael "Wobby" Lenoir, Leslie LaFountaine Sr., sister-in-law; Bernadette "Bunny" Lenoir, nephew John Martin Jr., and great-niece Everly Flora Jude LaFountaine
A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at 11:00 AM at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Belcourt, ND with visitation beginning at 8:00 AM and Rosary Service at 9:00 AM prior to the funeral mass. Fr. Tony Hession presiding. Burial will follow services at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery, Belcourt, ND.
