Harvey James Leonard, 82, passed away with his wife and grandchildren close by him on March 1, 2026. Born on September 13, 1943, Harvey lived a life rooted in faith, family, and the land he so dearly loved.

In 1968, he married the love of his life, Elsie P. Fritel. Together they built a home grounded in devotion and hard work, raising two children, Brian and Stacey. Their family grew to include a beloved daughter-in-law, Amy Jo, nine cherished grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren who brought immeasurable pride and happiness to his later years.

Harvey spent his life farming, answering a calling that was as much about stewardship as it was about livelihood. He believed in caring for the earth, tending his livestock, and honoring the rhythm of the seasons. After retiring from farming, he worked for Rugby Envision and North Central Grain for a time before stepping into full retirement, though a farmer's hands never truly rest.

He had a deep love for horses and a profound respect for the value of a good one. To Harvey, a good horse was a partner—steady, dependable, and worthy of care—qualities he carried within himself.

Harvey was blessed with a strong Irish demeanor—steady in conviction, quick with a spark of humor, and never short on personality. He had a remarkable ability to come up with unique phrases, lovingly dubbed "Harv-isms" by his grandchildren. His one-liners became family treasures, repeated often and remembered fondly. If he were still here, he would likely say he understands that saying goodbye to a loved one is rougher than a stucco bathtub. His humor and wit, delivered with a twinkle in his eye, will be remembered with warmth and admiration.

Some of the grandchildren's favorite memories were the simple, joyful ones. Harvey loved shooting gophers with his grandkids, turning an ordinary day into an adventure as he tried to out-do his sharp-eyed young friends.   He wasn't above upgrading his own gun/scope to make sure he was the top sniper in the field.  He gave endless rides on the four-wheeler, creating laughter that echoed across the fields. Grandpa Harv's old Ford pickup was the classroom for all young drivers, with Harv reminding the kids they didn't need to hit every bump in the county as they drove.  And no visit was complete without Grandpa serving root beer floats, a tradition the grandkids could always count on. Being "Grandpa" wasn't just a title to Harvey—it was one of his greatest callings.

A devout Catholic, Harvey lived his faith quietly and faithfully each day. He showed his devotion not only in prayer, but in the way he provided for his family, cared for his land, and offered steady guidance without fanfare. His life was a testament to simple goodness and unwavering commitment.

While he was proud of many things, his greatest joy was his family. He rarely missed a game, a concert, or a school event, sitting in the stands with a watchful eye and a full heart. He found pure happiness in cheering on his grandchildren and later delighting in the growing circle of great-grandchildren.

Harvey's steady presence, gentle strength, quick wit, and quiet support will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him. His legacy lives on in the fields he tended, the faith he practiced, the laughter he inspired, and the family he cherished above all else.

His roots were planted by his parents, James and Irene (Charlebois), and strengthened by his brother, Chuckie, who passed before him.  His branches reach on through his wife, Elsie; their son, Brian (Amy Jo), grandchildren Zach (Eric), Elias and Aleah; Bryce (Shelby), Maverick, Wade and Cohen; Gabe (Kinze), Paige and Levi; Maria and Justine; their daughter Stacey, grandchildren Gabriel, Emersyn, Dominic and Antonia; and through his sisters Carmen and Carole.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, March 6, 2026 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rolette, ND with a Rosary Service at 7:00 PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rolette, ND. Burial will take place in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rolette, ND in the spring. Father Petro Ndunguru presiding.
