Gregory Charbonneau, age 70, of Belcourt, ND passed away at the Heartland Nursing Home in Devils Lake, ND on June 19, 2020 with his daughters, Sheila and Ester, by his side.
Gregory Eugene Charbonneau, known as Greg, was born on October 20, 1949 in Fort Totten, ND to Anthony Charbonneau and Rose Ann (Baker) Charbonneau. He was raised and educated on the Spirit Lake Reservation in Fort Totten.
Greg had many fond memories of growing up as a kid. He often talked about the things he and his siblings would do for fun, and the hard work of living in his days.
On March 28, 1969 Greg enlisted in the Navy. He received and honorable discharge February 16, 1971, receiving several medals including, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Bronze Star, which he was very proud of.
Greg worked several different jobs throughout his life. The last job he talked about, to everyone who visited with him, was working for Sonny Jeanotte's Construction Company. In this job he worked with sheet metal and insulation. He would always say, "I'm going to go back to work for Sonny…I wonder if he still has his business?" The family would like to thank you Sony for having such a big impact on Greg. He thought the world of you.
Greg had a love for cooking and he enjoyed spending time with family, visiting for hours. He had a great sense of humor and would tease and joke around with everyone.
Greg met Lila St. Claire in 1972. Together they had five children, Sheila, Marvin, Greg Jr., Ester, and Cody. He loved his family and worked really hard to make a life for them. In 1992, Greg and Lila separated with good standings. Both continued to play a huge part in raising their children.
In 1996, Greg met the love of his life, Sandy Jeanotte. He always said, "Sandy and I had a lot of good times together." Memories he talked about often was how he and Sandy would cook up a big meal every Sunday and invite family and friends over to eat. He would joke and say, "It was a fun time enjoying our company's company." In 2009 the love of his life passed away. He would say, "I miss Sandy, she was a good person and she took care of me…well, we took care of each other."
Greg was a good person with a big heart. He showed a lot of love and compassion for everyone around him. He would give you the shirt off his back if one asked him for it.
Greg is survived by his children, Sheila (Howie), Greg Jr., Ester (Lance), and Cody; brothers, Anthony Sr., Richard Sr. (Patlene), Roger, and Dwayne; sisters, Betty, Lorna, Bernie, and Cindy (Tim); and many grandchildren and 23+ great grandchildren.
