Gilbert Martell, age 71, of Belcourt, ND passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2026 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Gilbert Henry Martell was born on June 11, 1955 in Belcourt, ND to George and Mary (Pays) Martell. He was raised in Belcourt and completed his education at boarding schools and through Belcourt schools. Gilbert worked at Turtle Mountain Manufacturing as a welder for a short time before enlisting in the United States Marines Corps. He received an honorable discharge. Gilbert married the love of his life on November 16, 2024, Lori Davis, after being together for over 40 years. He was the proud father of six children, Gilbert, Pamela, Jake, Keara, Taylor, and Henry. Gilbert was a bus driver for Belcourt schools for many years until retiring in 2016. He was a true jack of all trades, skilled in many areas of work, enjoying tinkering and small engine repair. Gilbert liked the outdoors, riding horses, camping, and fishing, as well as playing guitar and singing. He loved time spent with his family members, especially his grandchildren Kenlei and Zimmeria, which he had a special bond. Gilbert will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.

Gilbert is survived by is wife, Lori Martell of Belcourt; children, Gilbert (Leslie) Martell of Grand Forks, Pamela (Terrance) Martell-Gladue, Jake Martell, Keara Martell, and Taylor Davis, all of Belcourt; grandchildren, Kaisee, Cash, Kaylee, Kendall, Aiden, Easton, Shaylor, Dulton, Gianna, Geowana, Kenlei, Mia, Analeigh, Wyatt, and Ronin; great grandchildren, Zimmeria, Ziya, and Zion, and many more; siblings, Frank Martell, Sandra Martell, Stella (Gary) Renault, Carol Belgarde, and Betty (Richard) Marcellais, all of Belcourt; and many nieces and nephews.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, son, Henry Martell, sisters, Rosie Sutton and Theresa Patnaude, and brothers, Robert, William, Raymond, Patrick, Clifford, and George Jr. Martell.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 9, 2026 at Lynn Gourneau Round House, Belcourt, ND with visitation beginning at 8:00 AM and Rosary Service at 9:00 AM prior to the funeral services. Burial will follow at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery, Belcourt, ND.
