Eugene "Chi-boy" Poitra
August 29, 1937 – July 7, 2025
Eugene Poitra, lovingly known as "Chi-boy," age 87, of St. John, ND, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 7, 2025.
Eugene was born on August 29, 1937, in Belcourt, ND, to John and Virginia (Morin) Poitra. He was raised in St. John and received his education through the 10th grade at Greatwalker School and Belcourt School.
In 1956, at the age of 19, Chi-boy proudly enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served his country with honor and was honorably discharged following his service. He was a proud member of the Lilley-Dionne American Legion Post #262 of Belcourt, ND.
After his time in the military, Eugene worked a variety of jobs, including painting and maintenance at San Haven and housekeeping at Belcourt schools. He also lived and worked briefly in California and later spent time working in the mines of Montana, where he often brought home small treasures for Shirley — thoughtful tokens that reflected his generous and loving spirit. He eventually began a long and devoted career with the Indian Health Service (IHS) as a housekeeper in the Operating Room. Wearing his white coat with pride, Eugene earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and patients alike until his retirement in 2009.
On December 28, 1960, Eugene married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Bercier. Together they built a beautiful life centered on love, family, and faith. He was a proud and devoted father of seven children, grandfather to 23, great-grandfather to 31, and great-great-grandfather to one.
Chi-boy was known for his humility, honesty, and steady presence. He was the rock of his family — strong, dependable, and deeply respected. He loved the outdoors and found joy in the rhythm of the seasons. In the summer, he worked in the hay fields and pastures; in the fall, he looked forward to hunting; and in the winter, he could be found ice fishing, patiently waiting for the next big walleye. Eugene also cherished spending time with his family, playing cards, and betting on NFL games — always adding a little fun and friendly competition to family gatherings. His deep connection to the land and love of family reflected the quiet, enduring spirit of a man who found peace in nature and joy in life's simple pleasures.
Eugene is survived by his children: Eileen (Poncho) McKinley of Fayetteville, NC; Tammie (Reed) Poitra of Burnsville, MN; John (Renee) Poitra of Belle Plaine, MN; Corey (Stacey) Poitra of St. John, ND; Shonel (Tim) McCloud of Belcourt, ND; and Tracy (Peno) Schroeder of St. John, ND, and Edward Lavallie of Belcourt. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; his sister Della Herdt; and brothers-in-law George Bercier and Jerry (Cheryl) Bercier.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, John and Virginia Poitra; his beloved wife, Shirley Ann; sisters Corrine (Philip) Parisien and Helen (Melvin) Parisien; brothers-in-law Oliver Parisien and Robert Herdt; and his grandson, Reed Poitra Jr and granddaughter Gabrielle McKenzie.
