Douglas Mongeon, age 74, of Rolla, ND passed away on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at his home with his wife by his side.

Douglas Louis Mongeon was born on August 3, 1946 in Rolla, ND to Edward Louis and Byrdie (Westby) Mongeon.  He was raised in Rolla and completed his education there as well, graduating from Rolla High School in 1964.  After graduation, he traveled to Idaho and worked for the forestry service.  Doug furthered his education at UND in Grand Forks.  He enlisted in the United States Army in 1968 and proudly served his country in the 82 ^nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper in Korea.  Doug received an honorable discharge in 1970 as a sergeant returning from overseas service.

Doug was united in marriage to Barbara Detweiler on February 19, 1972 in Rolla, ND.  He began working at his parents' Ben Franklin store alongside his mother Byrdie and brother Michael.  Doug and Michael later owned and managed the store for many years until its closing, retiring in 1994.

Doug loved his time out on the golf course with Barbara and friends, and he was glad to have been involved in the start-up of the Rolla Country Club.  He was also an avid bird and wild game hunter, and he valued his membership at the Rolla Gun Club.  At home, he enjoyed the companionship of their various cats and dogs.  Fond of warm climates, he and Barbara began vacationing in Mexico, and eventually transitioned to wintering in Arizona each year.  Doug was respected by his community and he happily called Rolla home.  He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.

Doug is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Mongeon of Rolla; brother, Michael Mongeon of Rolla; sister, Mary Jane Powell of Colorado Springs, CO; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Byrdie Mongeon.

Doug's burial at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, ND is open to family and friends on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at 1:00 PM.  Prompt arrival time is requested at 12:45 PM. Military Honors by the Mandan VFW/American Legion Post #707 and the Military Funeral Honor Guard of Grand Forks.

A Celebration of Life for Doug will be Sunday, August 1, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the American Legion Cabin in Rolla.
