Darrell Benjamin
Trottier
Nov 21, 1962 — Oct 21, 2023
Darrell Trottier, age 60, of Belcourt ND passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Sanford Hospital, Fargo, ND surrounded by his family.
Darrell Benjamin Trottier was born November 21, 1962 in Belcourt, ND to Patrick and Antoinette (Gourneau) Trottier. He was baptized at St. Ann's on December 1, 1962. His God parents were Gary Gourneau and Margaret Decoteau. He had five brothers-- Richard, Martin, Clifford, Randy and Jodi and three sisters-- Sandy, Roberta and Priscilla. He was united in marriage to Sherri Davis on August 6, 1988. Together they had three daughters—Toni, Erin, and Raquel.
He was raised in Belcourt and completed high school in 1982. He attended Turtle Mountain Community College where he completed welding training in 1983 and went to work at Turtle Mountain Manufacturing as a welder. While he enjoyed his job, law enforcement was calling. He began his career as a dispatcher in 1985 at the Belcourt Police Department. He became a police officer shortly after. In 1992, he became a lieutenant at Belcourt and later transferred to Fort Totten where he became the Chief of Police. He remained there for 10 years before transferring back to Belcourt.
Throughout his career he participated in an abundance of specialized training in many places such as Marana, Arizona; Artesia, New Mexico; and Glenco, Georgia. He also participated in many short-term training courses that helped him in his work. Darrell was able to tell some interesting stories about his many years in law enforcement. He told of dangerous missions and others that were humorous and/or just plain interesting. He retired in 2011 as the Criminal Investigator in Belcourt. In 2012, he surprised his family and started a new career. He became a bus driver for Head Start and he loved it. In fact, he was still a current bus driver. Another thing Darrell enjoyed was camping. Darrell and Sherri have a camp site at Devils Lake and they spent a lot of time there in the summers. He also enjoyed doing little projects on his Bobcat, but the biggest joy he had was spending time with his grandkids. He helped to make a playground in their yard and he loved to help them ride their horses. He was an outdoors guy which is where he spent the most time with the grandkids.
He is survived by his wife, Sherri; daughters, Toni (Charles) Gladue, Erin Trottier (Coy Garrison), and Raquel; brothers, Martin (Lisa) Trottier, and Jodi Trottier; Sisters, Sandy (Vernie) Parisien, Roberta (Bob) Baker, and Priscilla Trottier; grandchildren Kayden, Dane, Lyne Marie, Kip, Dean, Sonny, Duke, Kavin and numerous nieces and nephews.
Darrell was preceded in death by parents, Patrick and Antoinette Trottier; brothers Randy, Clifford and Richard Trottier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Belcourt, ND with a visitation beginning at 8:00 AM and Rosary Service at 9:00 AM prior to the funeral mass. Father David Snow presiding.
