Obituary

Cleo George Charlebois, 85 of rural Belcourt, ND passed away May 18, 2023.

He was born in Rolla, ND to Gustave and Hazel (Kuster) Charlebois, on March 22, 1938.  He graduated from Rolla High School where he met Sonya Schwanbeck, his wife of nearly 63 years.  They were married at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Thorne, ND.  They had three children and farmed north of Rolette, ND.

Cleo drove school bus for over 30 years, but he was truly a farmer at heart. His joy was living and working on his farm all year long. Spring planting and Fall harvests were favorites along with baling hay for his Black Angus cattle.  An early morning walk around the farmyard with a cup of coffee in hand was his normal routine.

Throughout his life, his love for the great outdoors took him on many hunting, fishing and trapping excursions. He was an excellent marksman, holding numerous titles over the years and he enjoyed competitions through the local gun club.

Checkers was his game and he rarely lost. A good game over the internet always kept him entertained. He was tickled when he beat players from other countries.  Cleo was a motorcycle enthusiast and cherished Sunday rides after church with family and friends. The only thing he loved better than a good rain was telling a good story. Visiting with his grandchildren, many beloved cousins and extended family members meant the world to him. He was a long -time member of St. Joachim Catholic Church in Rolla, ND.

Cleo was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his wife, Sonya; children, Mark, Marcy Hanstad (Dave) and Michelle Nagel (Jerry); grandchildren; Jake Hanstad, Mikayla Amundson (Sean), Shelby, and Jackson Nagel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at St. Joachim Catholic Church, Rolla, ND with Father Thai Arul presiding.  Burial will take place in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rolette, ND at 5:00 PM.
