Obituary

Albert Azure, age 90, of St. John, ND passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Quentin Burdick Memorial Hospital, Belcourt, ND.

Albert Alphonse Azure was born on May 18, 1934 in rural St. John, ND to Alphonse and Rose (LaFountain) Azure.  He was raised in St. John and completed his education there as well.  Albert was united in marriage to Theresa Schroeder on August 26, 1957 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Belcourt.  Together they had seven children, Robert, Betty, Dave, Ken, Carol, Phyllis, and Lorraine. Albert was a heavy equipment operator for many years, very good at his job, as many appreciated his roadwork.  He was a farmer and rancher for many years as well.  Albert enjoyed music, often playing violin and fiddle next to his wife, Theresa.  They played beautiful music together.  He liked the outdoors, hunting deer throughout the years and filling a once in a lifetime moose tag as well.  Albert was a hard-working man and enjoyed his work, not having much free time for hobbies.  He was a very creative man and loved to build things. He was active at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, on church council and helped with church activities. Albert loved his family dearly, his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many people he came in contact with, especially his friends at the North 40.  Albert will be lovingly remembered and forever missed.

Albert is survived by his children, Robert (Sandy) Azure of St. John, Betty Hunt (Johnny Baker) of St. John, Dave (Carrie) Azure of Belcourt, Ken (Shelly) Azure of Belcourt, Carol (Gary Sr.) Hunt of Dunseith, and Lorraine (Heath) Gourneau of St. John; 22 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; brother, Anthony "Damian" Azure of St. John; son-in-law, Clark Gourneau of Belcourt; brother and sister-in-law's, George and Cecelia Azure, Dora Ward, Marie LaFountain, and Carla Schroeder, all of Dunseith; and many nieces and nephews.

Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Alphonse and Rose Azure, wife, Theresa Azure, daughter, Phyllis Gourneau, granddaughter, Jade Azure, brothers, Peter (Deloris), Raymond, and Francis (Martha) Azure, and sisters, Dorothy (Mike) Page and infant sister, Theresa Azure, father and mother-in-law, Walter and Mary Schroeder, brother and sister-in-law's, Melvin and Marlene Schroeder, and William and Janice Schroeder, brother-in-law's, Walter Schroeder Jr., Alfred Schroeder, and Gerald Ward, sister-in-law, Evelyn LaFromboise, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Casket Bearers are Travis Azure, Kyle Azure, Aiven Gourneau, Kelly Azure, Cody Hunt, and Jace Azure.  Honorary Bearers are Peter "Peto" Azure Jr., Conway Schroeder, Seymour Page, Clarence Schroeder, Eric Azure, Dustin Gourneau, David Blake Azure, Corey Poitra, Johnny Azure, Philip Azure, Shaun Counts, and Marlin Schroeder. Music by Jerry Parisien, David Blake Azure, Ryan Keplin, and Craig Lunday. Eucharistic Gifts by daughters, Betty Hunt, Carol Hunt, and Lorraine Gourneau. Readers are Debbie Poitra and Paula Belgarde. Eulogy by Gary Hunt Jr. Pall placed by his granddaughters, Jaime, Jen, Kristy, Michella, Jackie, Maria, Kristin, Katie, Kayla, and Megan. Rosary led by David and JeriAnn Azure with daughters, Akealyes and Bella.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, St. John, ND with visitation beginning at 8:00 AM and Rosary Service at 9:00 AM prior to the funeral mass.  Father Richard Fineo presiding. Burial will take place in St. Benedict's Catholic Cemetery, Belcourt, ND in the spring of 2025. A meal will follow the funeral mass in the church basement, all are welcome to attend.
